From a Vision to East Texas Impact
Goodwill Industries International was founded on the vision of Rev. Edgar J. Helms at Morgan Memorial Chapel in Boston, Massachusetts. Confronted with the pressing needs of the hungry, homeless, and unemployed in his community, Rev. Helms sought a way to provide both dignity and opportunity. With a burlap coffee bag in hand, he went door to door collecting unwanted clothing and household goods. These items were repaired and resold, with proceeds used to pay wages for individuals who otherwise struggled to find work. His simple yet powerful idea became the foundation of Goodwill’s mission worldwide.
Goodwill Industries of East Texas, Inc. (GIET) began as a branch of the Dallas Goodwill. Recognizing a local need to support individuals facing barriers to employment, Tyler leaders - including Isadore Roosth, D.K. Caldwell, and C.R. Lindsey - rallied community support to bring Goodwill to East Texas. In 1975, GIET was incorporated as an independent nonprofit organization and granted 501(c)(3) status by the IRS. Soon after, retail stores opened to receive donations, and rehabilitation services were introduced to further expand the mission.
In 1997, Opportunities in Tyler - a sheltered workshop employing individuals with cognitive and physical disabilities - joined the Goodwill family. This merger created Goodwill’s Commercial Services Division, which offers assembly, kitting, pick-and-pack, and packaging services to companies across the nation, while providing meaningful employment to individuals who might otherwise be overlooked.
Nearly four decades later, that spirit of partnership continues. In 2024, Lick em Stick em approached Goodwill’s Commercial Services Division for production and packaging support. Today, Goodwill has packaged more than 50,000 bags of Lick’em Stick’em and Pig Nasty products. With distribution already expanding to hardware stores and grocers, Goodwill Industries of East Texas is preparing to bring these items directly into its own retail stores.
From a burlap coffee bag in Boston to bustling operations across East Texas, Goodwill’s legacy remains the same: turning donations and partnerships into opportunities, and transforming lives through the power of work.
